engineering and art!!!!

Amalgamation of engineering and art

Art and engineering go like tom and jerry-one overtaking the other at every point of time but both necessarily going together.
Individually art is to engineering what chocolate sauce is to vanilla ice cream-alleviating the taste buds of vision and aesthetics. Any engineering marvel however perfect may it be, in absence of an aesthetic touch would just be a mere body without a soul. Imagine a world without structures like the taj mahal, the pyramids of Egypt , the Eiffel tower and the thousands of other that are a quintessence of amalgamation of art and engineering.
Engineering is to art what color is to a painter- you need a medium to express your wildest of imaginations. Without the science of design it’s impossible to incorporate the passion of or art into its real form. Would the unique shapes of petronas towers or cars like Ferrari be possible with just mere designing?
We all know from the very commencement of the human civilization, art was the only medium of expressing thoughts & passing on the knowledge to their next generation. Cave paintings and murals are examples of art masterpieces before even civilizations existed. Man was and will always be hungry for more and more luxury and beauty. Then civilizations acted as the clusters of knowledge and art and emerged as the cradles of modern art and architecture. Structures of Mesopotamia , Maya, Inca, Harappa etc have left the modern Homo sapiens behind in the field of art. The power of design had always been there from history and gradually engineering provided art wings to fly high and established itself a well defined science distinguished well apart form art. And this resulted in the making of the well planned cities of the medieval era of the Romans, Greeks, Moguls, and various Indian dynasties.
Lets look into the present scenario. What does engineering mean? Its dictionary definition says the application f science to design various structures, commodities etc.
And art is a branch of creative activity concerned with creative and imaginative designs, sounds or ideas. The very word engineering makes people think just of buildings, bridges and roads. That’s just a small part of the infinite field! Why do people forget that hi-tech mobiles, laptops, clothes, machines, home appliances, electricity supply, furniture, footwear and even the sounds we hear on TV are lines of the vast spectrum of engineering and art clubbed together. Though all these include homogenous mergence of the two disciplines, nevertheless the present education curricula demarcate the two completely. Engineering is for capable people who study physics, chem., and math and arts is for people who cant make up till science- that’s the persisting social evil existing in specially our country. And its all about getting placements or a good MBA college after graduation. The very horizon of thinking and imagining beyond the specified limits of the curricula has been highly alloyed. Its futile to apply your brains because only cramming up can fetch you marks.
Art should not be something that is compulsorily imposed upon but an environment is desired which leads to an obsessive greed of art. The only way to tackle this problem is to introduce a subject of design in each engi. Branch. It should not be the everyday theoretical subject but should be designed an a manner so that it gives a platform for an engineer to become an imagineer. The exam conducted should ensure that questions are creative and no one have the same model or design. Teachers of this subject should be vigilant and should themselves be interested in the subject. Some ideas may be worth patenting! Competitions and presentations can further help. Tours and industrial visits stressing upon the designing aspects should be a part of the regular studies. On the other hand fine arts people should be molded during their graduation in a manner which would lead them to work hand in hand with engineers in shaping the stream of knowledge and to give an artistic cult.
For all future engineers-
“an engineer without art
is a body without heart
greed for beautification
is an ever growing concatenation
so awaken the imagineer in thee
and enlighten the aesthetics of humanity!”
